Kolkata: The iconic Victoria Memorial on Friday became the latest target of hoax bomb threats in the city, which led to widespread panic and a complete evacuation of the historic landmark. The threat, claimed Lalbazar, was delivered via an email sent to the memorial’s authorities, warning of an imminent explosion on the premises using RDX explosives. Following receipt of the threat, the Victoria Memorial authorities immediately lodged a complaint at the Hastings Police Station. Law enforcement acted with high urgency, dispatching the bomb disposal squad and sniffer dog units.
Hundreds of visitors, including numerous foreign tourists, were moved out of the museum and gardens as the securitymen cordoned off the area for a thorough sweep. While the search continued for two hours, officials reported that nothing suspicious was found. This incident followed a troubling pattern of bomb hoax calls that plagued Bengal over the past two weeks. Last week, a wave of similar emails disrupted proceedings at several court and the Passport Seva Kendra. The threat campaign also targeted public service hubs, including post offices.
