Vadodara: Patients with unwanted skin pigmentation, including birthmarks and tattoos, can now access advanced laser treatment at the dermatology department of the state-run SSG Hospital. The hospital has installed a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser machine, which enables precise removal of vascular and pigmented skin lesions without damaging surrounding tissue. The equipment, costing around Rs 28 lakh, has been provided under the CSR initiative of Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (MGVCL) for use in the dermatology OPD.Hospital officials said the technology is effective in treating a range of pigmentation issues, including vascular and pigmented birthmarks as well as tattoos. Such marks, especially on exposed areas like the face and hands, can often lead to embarrassment and psychological distress, particularly among adolescents.Doctors added that laser tattoo removal can also benefit candidates aspiring for recruitment in services such as the army, police and other govt jobs, where tattoos are not permitted. The procedure is safe for Indian skin types and does not require surgery or hospital admission. It is conducted on OPD basis, allowing patients to resume their routine activities the same day. Depending on the size and intensity of pigmentation, patients may need six to 12 sessions, typically spaced three to four weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.Officials noted that similar treatments in private hospitals can cost between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000 or more. At SSG Hospital, however, the service will be provided free of cost to those in need.
