VARANASI: In a joint action by Raunapar and Jiyanpur police, a notorious criminal was arrested after suffering bullet injuries during an exchange of fire in the Balpur area on Saturday early morning.The police recovered a country-made pistol, live cartridges, cash amounting to Rs 10,100, and a motorcycle from him.Azamgarh’s ASP (Rural) Chirag Jain said on Saturday that the Raunapar police were busy with vehicle checks near Suraina Bazaar when a team from Jiyanpur also arrived, having been tipped off about the movement of a notorious criminal wanted in many cases of loot and other crimes. They increased vigilance on passers-by on adjoining roads as well. They reached the Balpur link road when a motorcycle-borne youth arrived.When they signalled him to stop with a torchlight, he tried to turn the vehicle but fell on the road in the process.The ASP said that before the police could reach him, he started firing at the police team, after which the police responded in self-defence, injuring the criminal in the left leg. The police apprehended him and rushed him to the hospital after recovering the firearm, motorcycle, and cash from him. He was identified as Ravi alias Ravishankar, aged 24, from Mau district. A total of 17 cases were lodged against him with the police in different districts, and a cash reward of Rs 25,000 was also placed on him by the police.
