Ahmedabad: A day-old baby girl was found dead in a plastic tub inside the women’s section of a public toilet on Sola Civil Hospital campus on Thursday. The incident came to light around 1.15pm when a sanitation worker discovered the infant during routine cleaning work and informed hospital staff.Following the message, on-duty officer Jahidkhan Ismailkhan, unarmed head constable, stationed at Sola High Court police station, reached the hospital and found the infant already deceased in the emergency ward. The child was identified as a premature newborn female, estimated to be born earlier the same day.Primary investigation revealed that the body was left in a plastic tub inside the last cubicle of the women’s section of the toilet. No parent or guardian came forward to claim the child, and her identity remains unknown. Police suspect that the child’s mother deliberately abandoned the baby to hide its birth.The child’s body was sent for postmortem to determine the exact cause of death, and an inquest panchnama was conducted between 2.15pm and 3.15pm. Sola police registered an FIR under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which deals with the concealment of birth by secret disposal of a body. Further investigation is underway to identify the woman involved using CCTV footage from nearby areas and by taking witness statements.Police will also probe the angle if it is not the case of female foeticide.
