Rajkot: The forest department has launched a major water conservation initiative in the Little Rann of Kutch to improve wildlife habitat, curb soil erosion and strengthen the ecological balance of the arid region. The project focuses on soil and moisture conservation through the construction of specially designed embankments. State forest minister Arjun Modhwadia said work is under way on a 1km stretch, with plans to expand it in phases. Officials said the embankments will help store 1.35 crore litres of rainwater during the monsoon. The stored water is expected to provide a natural source of drinking water for wildlife till winter. Over time, the water body will stabilise and become suitable for sustained use. “This is not just a storage project. It is an effort to develop a complete ecosystem in the Little Rann,” Modhwadia said. He added that improved soil moisture will boost fertility and promote the growth of native grasses, making more fodder available for herbivores, thus supporting a gradual increase in their numbers. The reservoirs being developed are also expected to attract local and migratory birds. A raised mound in the middle of the pond will be created to provide a safe resting and nesting area for birds and animals. Minister of state for forests Pravin Mali said these scientifically built embankments will reduce soil erosion and help retain soil moisture. He described the initiative as an important step towards building climate resilience in arid and semi-arid zones. Officials say the project will strengthen biodiversity in the Little Rann and enhance its reputation as an eco-tourism destination while ensuring long-term sustainability.
