The political churn begins on Wednesday, when NDA leaders gather in New Delhi to mark the 12th anniversary of the government and celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s record as the longest-serving elected head of government in uninterrupted tenure.
The meeting comes just two days after the INDIA bloc’s deliberations and amid signs of turbulence within the Opposition camp, particularly in Trinamool Congress.
Nearly 75 representatives from around 35 NDA constituent parties are expected to attend the meeting. Against this backdrop, discussions on delimitation have regained momentum within the government.
Sources said the principal challenge remains securing the necessary numbers in Parliament for any future legislative exercise linked to the issue. The renewed activity comes amid indications that the government is assessing the political arithmetic required to build a broader consensus.
Besides keeping a close watch on developments within Trinamool, efforts are also understood to be underway to engage regional parties, including DMK, which has emerged as one of the strongest critics of the potential impact of delimitation on southern states.
At the same time, NDA leaders and BJP strategists are exploring possibilities to widen the coalition’s footprint. The evolving political landscape has fuelled expectations of fresh realignments, with the possibility of defections and new alliance arrangements not being ruled out.Particular attention is focused on Maharashtra, where NDA constituents are understood to be assessing opportunities for further political expansion.
Sources said the Union law ministry has begun work on a revised framework by reworking elements of an earlier delimitation draft. The exercise is aimed at addressing concerns raised during previous consultations while ensuring that any eventual proposal remains both politically and constitutionally sustainable.
While no final decision has been taken, the option of convening a special session of Parliament for major legislative and political initiatives is also not being ruled out.
Parallel to the policy exercise, BJP is preparing for organisational changes too. The new team under BJP chief Nitin Nabin is expected to be announced in the coming days and is likely to combine experienced organisational leaders with younger faces as the party seeks to balance continuity with generational renewal. BJP is also expected to step up consultations with RSS to fill vacant Sangathan Mantri positions in several state units.
Taken together, the movement on delimitation, efforts to expand NDA, possible parliamentary initiatives and organisational restructuring point to a period of heightened political activity that could shape the ruling coalition’s strategy in the months ahead.
