NEW DELHI: Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for Mumbai Suburban, Thane, and Palghar districts.In the last 24 hours, Mumbai City received 47.77 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs received 33.1 mm, and the western Suburbs received 53.92 mm of rain.Also, 7 incidents of short circuit and 11 tree/tree branches fell. 2 incidents of portion of house collapse were also reported, but fortunately, no one reported to be injured in monsoon-related incidents in the last 24 hours.For the second consecutive day, Mumbai recorded over 100mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period. The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory, which serves as the city’s benchmark station, registered 107.6mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30am on Tuesday. However, the rainfall intensity eased later in the day, with the Santacruz station logging just 17.5mm and Colaba only 6mm. For Thursday, a more severe orange alert has been issued, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. The forecast also includes gusty winds, with speeds ranging between 40–50 kmph. Residents, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas, have been advised to exercise caution.In a rain-related incident, a landslide was reported at Khindi Pada in Bhandup on Tuesday night. No injuries were reported as of now.
Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall in the past few days has significantly boosted water reserves in the lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the combined water stock in the seven key reservoirs has now reached 86.88% of their total capacity.(With agency inputs)
