Guwahati: Election Commission on Tuesday said majority of political parties in Assam have urged the commission to conduct the forthcoming Assam assembly elections in a single phase, or at most two, while also requesting that polling dates be scheduled keeping the Rongali Bihu festival in mind.Assam CM Himanta Biswa sarma said, “BJP has asked for a single-phase elections. Assam is no longer under the shadow of militancy and so the polls can be held in one phase.”During the commission’s two day review visit to Guwahati, representatives of BJP, Congress, AIUDF, AGP, CPI(M), AAP, UPPL and BPF met the full bench led by chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.Following the interactions, the commission held a detailed review with senior police and administrative officials on law and order, EVM management, logistics, training, seizures and voter awareness.However, Congress submitted a memorandum alleging harassment of citizens during the special revision of the voter list.Addressing the media later, Congress MP Rakibul Hussain alleged that BJP wanted elections to be concluded before Rongali Bihu to divert public attention from the celebration in absence of late Zubeen Garg.
