Belagavi: The heavy rain continued for the past two days, affecting normal life across the Belagavi district. Low-lying areas like Vadagoan and Shahapur bore the brunt in Belagavi city. Many trees in various areas of the city were uprooted due to the heavy rain and wind. Potholes formed on roads, causing severe disruption to vehicular traffic.The torrential rain that lashed the district throughout the night on Monday continued on Tuesday as well. Belagavi district was literally shaken by the heavy downpour of the monsoon. According to sources from the district administration, from Monday to Tuesday morning, heaviest rainfall of 13mm against normal rainfall of 5mm was recorded in Belagavi district. Khanapur taluk received 62mm, Belagavi 25mm, Kittur 11mm, Yaragatti 8mm, and Hukkeri 7mm in the last 24 hours. Belagavi district received 139% more rainfall than usual in 24 hours.Many houses and shops in Bhendi Bazaar, Ganapati Galli, Khade Bazaar, Shahapur, Gandhi Nagar, Samarth Nagar, Old PB Road, and various low-lying areas of Belagavi city were flooded. In addition, residents faced problems as water entered houses in low-lying areas of the city due to heavy rain. Potholes on the roads caused severe disruption to vehicle traffic.Large trees were uprooted due to heavy rain and wind in more than a dozen places, including Visvesvaraya Nagar, Sadashivanagar, Shahunagar, and Bauxite Road, blocking road traffic. Electricity poles were also knocked down, and Hescom undertook emergency repairs. Forest department and corporation staff carried out operations to clear fallen trees.The continuous rains across Belagavi city caused problems due to blocked drains. After receiving a flood of complaints, BCC commissioner B Shubha personally stepped onto the roads, holding an umbrella, and initiated arrangements to clean the drains. She inspected the area and instructed BCC staff to clear the blockages in the areas where they were occurring.The BCC commissioner said that three teams have already been formed to deal with the problems caused by rain within BCC limits, and those teams will come to the aid of the people during the rains. She requested people to contact the Corporation staff in case of emergencies.Life in the cities and towns of Belagavi district was also disrupted, with trees uprooted, houses flooded, electricity poles toppled, power outages, and many other problems.DC declares holidayDeputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan declared a holiday for anganwadi centres, govt, aided and unaided primary schools, high schools, and undergraduate colleges in Belagavi and Khanapur taluk on June 25.
