Varanasi: A man in Mirzapur has been booked for allegedly killing six puppies by throwing them into a well in Dharampur village under the Chunar police station area of the district. The accused, Sarvesh Singh alias Kattan, has been booked under section 325 (maiming or killing of an animal) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960. A resident, Bhagwat Singh, had filed a complaint against Sarvesh, accusing him of throwing six puppies into his well on Jan 25. Bhagwat claimed he discovered this after scanning the CCTV footage, which showed Sarvesh doing this to intimidate him. He also alleged that Sarvesh broke his boundary wall and is encroaching on his property, a case that is already with the police.
Chunar inspector Vijay Shankar said the accused has been booked under relevant laws and the matter is being investigated. Section 325 of the BNS, 2023, prescribes a punishment of imprisonment for a term which may extend to 5 years, or with a fine, or both. Section 11 of the PCA Act, 1960, recognises acts that cause unnecessary pain or suffering to animals as offences and provides for penal action, including fines and imprisonment, against those found guilty of committing cruelty to animals.
