Thiruvananthapuram: General education and labour minister V Sivankutty inaugurated a modern warehouse complex near Chalai market on Friday.Speaking after inaugurating the facility, Sivankutty said economic growth and the expansion of commerce are key to generating employment opportunities. He noted that once the warehouse becomes fully operational, it would create both direct and indirect job opportunities in sectors such as logistics, goods handling, packaging and transportation.“A city becomes truly smart not merely by constructing modern buildings, but when such projects benefit ordinary workers and traders,” he said.The project was completed within the stipulated timeframe due to govt’s strong commitment and careful planning, he added. The project marks a significant milestone in the development of Chalai, one of the city’s oldest and busiest commercial hubs. The warehouse complex was constructed through the joint efforts of Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (Trida) and Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd. The facility fulfils a long-standing demand from traders in the area for a publicly owned warehouse near the market.Built at a cost of around Rs 18.66 crore, the state-of-the-art complex came up on 2.24 acres, with a built-up area of about 2,350sq m. Located along Killipalam-Attakulangara bypass, the warehouse will help streamline the movement of goods and reduce traffic congestion in the crowded Chalai area.Several initiatives are currently being implemented under Smart City mission to transform the infrastructure and urban landscape of Thiruvananthapuram, said Sivankutty.He congratulated officials and workers of Trida and Smart City project for their efforts in completing the facility.
