Nagpur/Chandrapur: Parts of Vidarbha, including Nagpur, Akola and Chandrapur, experienced mild tremors on Saturday after two low-intensity earthquakes were reported in the region.A moderate earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit Hingoli district in Maharashtra on Saturday morning, triggering tremors in parts of Vidarbha.According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 8.45am at a shallow depth of 10km. Hingoli was the epicentre, with the strongest shaking reported there and in nearby districts such as Nanded. Officials said Nagpur is about 265km from the epicentre, where only mild vibrations were felt. The agency said the earthquake occurred in the intraplate region of the Deccan Plateau and was likely associated with the Kinnerasani-Godavari Fault. Data from the agency indicated that ground movement in Nagpur was minimal and posed no risk of damage. Experts said such earthquakes occur due to movement along ancient fault lines in the Deccan Plateau. They said the Hingoli region is in a moderate seismic zone, where occasional tremors of this nature are expected. No damage or casualties were reported.Later in the day, separate mild tremors were felt at 4.22pm in Rajura and Korpana of Chandrapur district. According to district administration officials, the quake measured 3.4 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of this tremor was near Hardona village in Rajura taluka with a depth of around 10km. Due to its low intensity, no loss of life or property was reported, although it caused brief panic among residents.Local tehsildars said both Rajura and Korpana talukas were unaffected in terms of damage. Geology expert Prof Suresh Chopane said such minor tremors can occur due to underground movements, possibly linked to water seepage from the Godavari basin. Authorities urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours, while assuring that the situation is under control.
