Nagpur: Both Indira Gandhi Govt Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH or Mayo Hospital) and Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur are staring at a severe water crisis following a 36-hour shutdown announced by Orange City Water Private Limited from Tuesday.Water supply will remain suspended from Tuesday 10am to Wednesday 10pm in parts of the city. Both the tertiary care centres were informed just a day in advance, leaving little time for contingency planning despite peak summer demand, said hospital authorities. Thousands of patients from Vidarbha and neighbouring states, along with their relatives, resident doctors and students, are expected to face hardships. The hospitals also house hostels for MBBS, PG, nursing and paramedical students, besides running essential services like kitchens and laundries. With no assured backup plan from OCW, hospital administrations are scrambling to manage the crisis. IGGMCH medical superintendent Dr Nitin Shende said 25 water tankers have been ordered to prevent shortages, with more to be arranged if needed. GMCH medical superintendent Dr Avinash Gawande wrote to OCW demanding a dedicated water pipeline to avoid recurring disruptions. The sudden shutdown amid intense heat is likely to severely impact patient care and daily hospital operations, said authorities.
