Vasco: Transport minister Mauvin Godinho on Thursday accused the airport operator GMR of pressurising and “lobbying” the Indian Navy to take over Dabolim airport.“Dabolim airport will continue its operations, as it is a preferred destination of domestic as well as foreign tourists. The central cabinet and Union council of ministers agreed to continue both Dabolim and Mopa airports. Goa being a small state, maximum tourists arrive here,” he said, and added that the opposition was creating rumours over the closure of Dabolim airport.“GMR is solidly pressurising the Indian Navy to take over civilian Dabolim airport for its benefit and, therefore, when I came to understand the plans of GMR, I stepped in and met defence minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi along with Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, where I apprised him and submitted a detailed memorandum on how tourism and the economy will suffer if Dabolim airport is closed,” said Godinho. He, however, maintained that the defence minister gave him a clear assurance of retaining Dabolim airport for civilian operations. “The opposition is trying to spread rumours about the closure of Dabolim airport. People should not fall prey to the statements made against govt. Govt will take every possible step to continue operations at Dabolim airport,” Godinho said.He added, “The assurance from the Centre is clear that both airports will continue to operate, and the question of Dabolim international airport shutting down does not arise. We remain committed to taking every necessary step to protect the interests and livelihood of our people.”
