Gurgaon: A portion of a busy road near Sector 12 intersection caved in on Monday after an underground sewer manhole wall collapsed, creating a gaping cavity that disrupted traffic flow in the area. The incident, which occurred early in the day, left damaged bitumen and broken asphalt layers surrounded by loose debris at the site. The affected stretch, which connects the city bus stand with key residential and commercial areas, was cordoned off to prevent accidents. GMDA initiated measures to assess and repair the damage.A senior GMDA official said the collapse was triggered by a structural failure in the manhole wall, leading to soil erosion beneath the road surface. “It appears that the wall of the manhole gave way, causing soil erosion under the surface and resulting in the settlement of the road. We have informed Infra 2 division, which will carry out the repair work,” the official said, adding that the full extent of the damage would only be determined once excavation began. While authorities have placed barricades to divert traffic from the affected stretch, commuters were faced with significant inconvenience on Monday. Rohit Malik, a resident of Sector 12A, expressed concern about the timing of the incident. “I saw half of the road barricaded when I was passing through this stretch in the afternoon. The authority concerned should take up the repair work without delay due to the ongoing monsoon,” he said. This isn’t the first such incident in the city. Last year, Basai Road experienced multiple cave-ins due to leaking sewer lines under MCG maintenance. Similarly, a section of Sohna highway has caved in five times over the past two years due to a damaged master sewer line. The highways authority has now decided to undertake the rehabilitation of GMDA’s master sewer line independently.
