Mangaluru: DC Darshan HV instructed National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials to take swift action to resolve issues on national highways. He chaired the District Road Safety Committee meeting at the DC’s office Thursday.He said 24 projects — including road widening, bypasses and flyovers — had been identified to prevent accidents at various points on the NH. Some major works had not begun due to traffic issues at key locations, worsening congestion. He issued a strict directive to complete all projects by the end of March with support from the traffic police.NHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi said construction of the new Kuloor bridge is progressing rapidly, and one part will be completed soon. A six-lane highway from Kuloor to Baikampady is under construction, with service roads on both sides. He said approval has been granted for a new railway underpass at the junction where the highway turns towards the Baikampady industrial area, and the tender process is under way.The DC instructed Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) officials to install street lights promptly on the Kuloor–Nanthoor stretch.Officials told the meeting that 720 drunk-driving cases had been recorded till Oct 30, 2025, with fines totalling over Rs 17.3 lakh. They also reported 8,066 cases involving tinted glass on vehicles, resulting in fines of over Rs 38.3 lakh.NHAI was advised to discuss with the traffic police the installation of signals at the Kallapu, Jappinamogaru and Mahakalipadpu junctions. It was also informed that the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) is constructing truck terminals at Tannirbhavi and Baikampady for truck parking.SP K Arun, assistant commissioner Meenakshi Arya, MUDA commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, DCP (crime and traffic) Ravi Shankar K, and others attended the meeting.
