Ambala: Ambala police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a man for allegedly cheating a local resident of Rs 25 lakh on the pretext of sending his son abroad.The arrested accused has been identified as Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Shekhupur Jagir village under Julkan police station in Patiala district of Punjab. He was produced before a court, which remanded him to police custody.Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Satbir Singh, in-charge of Naneola police post, said a case of cheating was registered at Naggal police station on March 9, following a complaint by Gurvinder Singh, a resident of Nagla village in Ambala district.Gurvinder, in his complaint, alleged that Gurmeet Singh promised to arrange for his son to be sent abroad and took Rs 25 lakh from him for the purpose. However, after receiving the money, the accused neither facilitated the foreign travel nor returned the amount. The complainant also alleged that when he demanded the money back, the accused issued threats to kill him.Based on the complaint and evidence gathered during the investigation, the police launched an operation and arrested Gurmeet Singh.During the remand period, investigators will attempt to recover the defrauded amount and determine whether other people were involved in the fraud. Police will also investigate whether the accused targeted more victims using a similar modus operandi.Meanwhile, Ambala police appealed to the public to remain vigilant and to contact only govt-authorised agents for overseas travel arrangements.
