Silchar: A 29-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her husband in Assam’s Sribhumi district on Monday afternoon, police said, adding that the accused later walked into the police station carrying a blood-stained axe and surrendered.The incident took place at Bahadurpur village under Nilambazar police station limits. Police identified the accused as Jaynal Uddin (38) and the victim as Safia Begum (29). Their minor daughter was present at the time of the alleged attack.
Police sources said the couple had been facing marital discord for several months, with Jaynal reportedly suspecting his wife of an extramarital relationship. Neighbours said loud arguments and altercations were frequent.On Monday around noon, a dispute reportedly began after Jaynal tried to discipline their daughter and Safia objected, leading to a heated exchange. Police said Jaynal allegedly picked up a sharp axe and struck Safia on the back of her head, killing her on the spot.Police said the accused then went to Nilambazar police station with the weapon and confessed. Officers who rushed to the house found the woman lying in a pool of blood inside the residence.The body was sent to Sribhumi Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.The couple’s nine-year-old daughter, who reportedly witnessed the incident, has given a preliminary account to police, officials said, adding that her formal statement will be recorded during the investigation.The officer-in-charge of Nilambazar police station and the local circle officer visited the spot and conducted a preliminary inquiry. Police said a case has been registered and further investigation is underway, including questioning the accused to establish the sequence of events and whether there were prior complaints of domestic violence.The couple had been married for around 12 years and lived in the same village. The accused will be produced before a local court after legal formalities, police said.
