Jaipur: Bikaner police Tuesday detained a 25-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 13-year-old girl who was on her way to appear for her Class 8 board exam on Feb 21. SP Kavendra Singh Sagar said the accused, Shyam Sunder, was taken into custody after an extensive investigation by multiple police teams. Sagar said the girl was raped before the murder, though confirmation would depend on the post-mortem report. The girl was found dead in a semi-nude condition while heading to school, triggering outrage in the locality. Family members and locals staged a protest and initially refused to allow a post-mortem. Senior police officials intervened and assured a fair investigation, after which the family agreed to the autopsy. The cremation was conducted Tuesday. Police said the preliminary investigation suggested the accused did not know the victim. He allegedly accosted her on the way and strangled her.
