Kolkata: Kolkata Police arrested the main accused, Mohammad Salman, and his father, Mohammad Anwar, in the Beniapukur attempt-to-murder case involving the shooting of a 23-year-old mechanic around 24 hours after the incident was reported. The cops also seized illegal arms and ammunition from their possession, officers said on Wednesday. The duo, who tried to flee to Kolkata after the incident, was arrested near Tiljala railway station on Wednesday morning. The accused were earlier booked under the attempt-to-murder section of BNS and for illegal possession of arms, police said, adding that they were produced in court on Wednesday, with cops wanting their police remand.”One country-made pistol and one magazine with two live cartridges were found from them,” said joint CP (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar. The shooting took place on Tuesday morning on Tiljala Road, barely 300 m from CNMC Hospital. The victim, Mohammad Niaz, was allegedly called out of his home and shot multiple times. He sustained two gunshot woundss to his leg and was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Cops said the shooting was triggered by a dispute began on Monday over the alleged theft of cold drinks from a shop. An elderly woman who runs the shop found two bottles missing and accused a minor. His mother denied the allegation and protested. Police said the woman then called a man named Suraj from a nearby area to mediate. During the discussion, Niaz questioned why a man from another locality was called. The argument flared up again in the evening. Police said Anwar supported Suraj, which led to an altercation with Niaz. Later that night, Salman called Niaz outside on the pretext of talking to him. Moments later Niaz’s family heard gunshots. Salman was previously named in a robbery case and was injured in a bomb blast.
