Ahmedabad: The Vadaj police on Monday registered a case of abetment to suicide against a man following the death of his wife, who jumped from the 6th floor of her brother’s residence in Nava Vadaj last month after alleged mental harassment.The complaint was filed by Deepak Sharma (35), a manager with a private firm on SG Highway. He stated that his elder sister, Asha Sharma, had been married to Vipul Jagdish Sharma of Chittorgarh for around 15 years. The couple has a son.According to the complaint, Asha allegedly faced mental and physical harassment at her matrimonial home soon after marriage but remained silent due to social pressures. In Nov 2025, she was brought to Ahmedabad by her mother after her in-laws informed the family about her deteriorating mental health.Deepak further stated that Asha underwent psychiatric treatment under Dr Parth Gohel in Vastrapur and was discharged with advice for follow-ups. However, her husband allegedly continued to harass her through phone calls and threatened her with divorce.Recalling the incident, the complainant said that on March 20, while he was at work, his wife informed him that Asha had jumped of the building. She was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared her dead a few hours later.The complaint also alleged that the accused had visited Ahmedabad in Feb and had again threatened Asha over the phone a day before her death.Police said an offence of abetment to suicide has been registered against Vipul, and further investigation was underway.
