In the run-up to assembly elections, West Bengal has carried out a major reshuffle in the police hierarchy, appointing Peeyush Pandey as the new Acting Director General (DG) of the state police. As the matter of appointing a permanent DG is currently pending in court, the state government decided to name an Acting DG. Pandey, a 1993-batch IPS officer, was serving as Director of Security before this appointment.
Apart from this, Supratim Sarkar has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata. Manoj Verma, who was serving as CP Kolkata, has been moved to the post of Director of Security.
Vineet Goyal has been appointed as the new Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order. Goyal had earlier served as the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, during the RG Kar incident. The current ADG (Law and Order), Javed Shamim, has been transferred to the post of ADG, Special Task Force (STF).
There have also been significant changes at the commissionerate level. Howrah Commissioner Praveen Tripathi has been posted as CP Barrackpore, while Barrackpore CP Murli Dhar Sharma has been given charge as CP Bidhannagar. Akash Magaria has been appointed as the new CP, Howrah.
Mukesh Kumar, who was serving as CP Bidhannagar, has been appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Murshidabad–Jangipur Range. The region is considered sensitive, and sources say Kumar was chosen for the role as he has previously served as SP in the area.
Chandannagar CP Amit Javalgi has been appointed IG, Burdwan Range, another sensitive zone. Aloke Rajhoria has been posted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Barasat Range, covering the sensitive North 24 Parganas district. Bhaskar Mukherjee has been appointed DIG, Presidency Range.
This extensive reshuffle comes ahead of the elections, with the newly constituted team tasked with maintaining law and order at a time when the opposition is questioning both the state’s law-and-order situation and the role of the police.
