Chandrapur: Maharashtra is set to establish its first timber museum and xylarium in Ballarpur, forest minister Ganesh Naik announced in the state assembly, stating that the ₹150crore project will be included in the forthcoming budget.The announcement followed a focused half-hour discussion led by former forest minister and BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar, who urged the creation of a world-class institution to showcase Vidarbha’s rich forest heritage.Mungantiwar highlighted that teakwood from Ballarpur has been used in prestigious national projects, including the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the new Parliament House, Bharat Mandapam, and furniture at the Prime Minister’s Office. “This underscores the national significance of Ballarpur’s timber legacy,” he said. Drawing comparisons with international wood research institutions, he stressed the need for a similar high-quality knowledge hub in the region.The proposed museum will be built on nearly 65 hectares of land in Ballarpur. It will feature a xylarium — a scientific collection of preserved wood specimens — alongside rare timber species, fossils from the Bhamragad region, and exhibits on forest conservation, climate change, and environmental education. The facility aims to serve as a research-driven knowledge centre comparable to global wood science institutions.Naik described the project as timely and justified, citing Ballarpur’s forest wealth, available land, and research potential. He assured the Assembly that the museum would be implemented.Besides preserving heritage, the museum is expected to boost tourism, research, and local employment. As Maharashtra’s only dedicated timber museum, it is projected to become a key attraction, drawing visitors from across India and abroad, while strengthening the local economy. The facility will also provide opportunities in wood science research, education, and employment, including roles in guiding, management, and related services for local youth.
