In Maharashtra, the remaining phases of the general elections for 12 Zilla Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis have been rescheduled to February 7. Initially set for February 5, the polling date was shifted due to the passing of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and the subsequent three-day state mourning declared in his honour. The counting of votes will now take place on February 9 instead of February 7.
The State Election Commission had originally announced the election timeline on January 13. According to this schedule, processes such as filing and withdrawal of nominations, allocation of symbols, and publication of the final list of candidates have been completed. The remaining stages include polling, vote counting, and the publication of elected members’ names in the Official Gazette.
The Supreme Court had granted an extension of only two weeks beyond January 31 for these elections. However, Ajit Pawar’s sudden demise on January 28 led the state government to declare a mourning period from January 28 to 30, necessitating adjustments to the election schedule.
District Collectors have been instructed to publish the revised election programme on January 31. Polling will now take place on February 7 from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, with public campaigning ending at 10:00 pm on February 5, 2026. Vote counting will commence at 10:00 am on February 9 at the respective counting centres.
Once the results are declared, the Model Code of Conduct will no longer be in effect in the respective locations, and the names of the elected members will be published in the Government Gazette by February 11.
