Dehradun, A ‘Mahapanchayat’ was held here on Friday, led by farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, to demand justice for Divyanshu Jatrana, who died in a clash stemming from a turf war between two groups studying at a private university.

A condolence meeting for Divyanshu , an engineering student, was also organised at the Asharodi check-post in Dehradun, during which his grandfather broke down in tears, remembering him.
While consoling Divyanshu’s grandfather, Tikait, the national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Kisan Union , stated that, much like Divyanshu’s family, there are thousands of people who send their children to Dehradun and Mussoorie for their education using their hard-earned money; however, incidents like Divyanshu’s murder have left them deeply concerned about the safety of their children.
Tikait remarked, “If this situation persists, outsiders who have hitherto regarded Dehradun as a safe and desirable place will begin to feel that the atmosphere here is no longer conducive. This will also tarnish Dehradun’s reputation.”
Tikait asserted that Dehradun and indeed the entire ‘Devbhoomi’ , Uttarakhand, belongs to everyone, and that the government, the administration, and the police must adopt a strict stance regarding this matter.
He also drew attention to the issue of drug trafficking and trade within the state, emphasising the urgent need for strict measures to curb these illicit activities.
The farmer leader declared that they had gathered there to seek justice from the government.
“Our demand is that those responsible for murder be apprehended and sent to jail,” Tikait stated.
When asked about the fact that most of the accused in the Divyanshu murder case hail from Bihar. Tikait then clarified that he does not engage in rhetoric based on casteism or regionalism.
“Whoever the perpetrator may be, they have committed a murder,” he said. “Had a youth from Muzaffarnagar committed this same act, would we have let him go unpunished?”
A large number of farmers from several districts of Uttar Pradesh, as well as from the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, participated in the Mahapanchayat. Dehradun’s Senior Superintendent of Police , Pramendra Singh Dobhal, also arrived to meet with the farmers.
Later, speaking to reporters, SSP Dobhal stated, “The investigation into the case is ongoing. So far, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.”
A violent clash erupted on the night of March 23 between two groups of students studying at a private university in Dehradun’s Premnagar area over a dispute regarding dominance; Divyanshu sustained critical injuries during this altercation. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Doon Hospital.
The police have also announced a reward of ₹25,000 each for the arrest of seven accused individuals currently absconding in connection with this case.
