In the face of potentially dangerous conditions in the hurricane season, lifeguards are urging seabathers to take precautions.
Speaking with the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday, some lifeguards suggested several best practices such as awareness of sea swells and advisories, and what the warning flags mean.
A trained professional for 40 years, Michael Gilkes, who operates at Batts Rock, St Michael, said each beach was different and advised seabathers to consult the respective lifeguards in the face of uncertainty.
“At Batts Rock, sometimes it’s not so good and we have an undertow or a rip tide. If they go to the beach and you don’t know where to bathe, come out and ask the lifeguard a question because we would tell them, ‘Today is a good day’ or ‘Don’t bathe over there because of the condition of the sea’,” he said.
