Abohar: Fazilka police have arrested Sandeep Tomar, a former Army captain convicted of murdering his wife, from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, nearly four years after he absconded following his conviction.Tomar had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 in connection with the murder of his wife Shweta Singh in Abohar. Police said he had been living under a changed identity and working at a juice factory in Chhindwara to evade arrest.According to investigators, Tomar, a resident of Kanpur, was posted at Abohar cantonment when the incident took place in 2013. Within five months of their marriage, he strangled his wife to death. Initially, he claimed it was a case of suicide.Acting on a complaint by the victim’s father, Ram Naresh, police registered a case of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Subsequent investigation revealed that the death was a case of murder by strangulation.Tomar was arrested and spent around five years in jail before being granted bail. He was later convicted by the Punjab and Haryana high court on September 23, 2022, and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, he fled soon after the verdict.Police said the accused altered his appearance and identity to avoid detection. With the help of Madhya Pradesh Police and technical surveillance, he was traced to Chhindwara and arrested.He was brought to Abohar on Saturday, produced before a magistrate on Sunday and sent to judicial custody.Police said efforts had been ongoing to track him during the period he was absconding.
