DGP told to leave no stone unturned
Security of protectees to be reviewed
Srinagar, Mar 12: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday spoke to National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah, assuring him that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the attempted attack on the veteran leader during a wedding function in Jammu a day earlier.
Top sources told Rising Kashmir that the Lieutenant Governor conveyed his concern over the incident and directed Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat to ensure that the circumstances leading to the security breach are fully investigated.
Senior officials were instructed to leave no stone unturned in establishing how the assailant managed to reach close proximity to Abdullah, who is a Z-plus category protectee, they said.
Sources also said the police chief has also been asked to review the security arrangements of protected persons across the Union Territory and ensure “airtight security” for political leaders and other protectees.
The conversation came hours after Abdullah survived what security officials described as a close-range assassination attempt during a private function in Jammu.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Abdullah was attending a wedding reception at a venue in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu.
According to officials, an armed man approached the venue and fired a shot towards the former chief minister, triggering panic among guests.
Security personnel accompanying Abdullah quickly intervened and overpowered the attacker before he could fire again. The accused was detained on the spot, and the weapon used in the attack was seized.
Officials said Abdullah escaped unharmed in the incident. They said the investigation ordered by the administration would examine the sequence of events leading to the attack, the motive of the accused and the adequacy of the security arrangements in place.
