Chennai: A lawyer on Wednesday moved Madras high court, seeking the court to take suo motu cognisance of the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl near Chennai on Monday. On Wednesday, when the first bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan commenced proceedings, advocate A P Suryaprakasam made a mention seeking an urgent hearing of the matter. “The court must take suo motu cognisance of the incident, as such incidents are being reported on a daily basis,” he said. When the bench asked why a suo motu proceeding must be initiated, he replied that since the issue involves the sexual assault of a minor girl, a copy of the FIR will not be made available to the public. The bench suggested the advocate file a formal petition so the issue can be taken into consideration.
