Srinagar, Feb 22: The sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) will commence in Gulmarg on Monday, bringing together over 400 athletes from 30 States and Union Territories for a four-day national winter sports event in Jammu and Kashmir.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will inaugurate the Games at the renowned ski resort in Baramulla district. The snow leg of the event follows the successful completion of the ice leg in Leh earlier this year.
Competitions will be held in four disciplines, Alpine Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, Nordic Skiing and Snowboarding, with Alpine Skiing expected to attract the highest participation. Organisers said snow conditions are favourable and preparations at all competition venues have been completed.
Security has been heightened across Gulmarg ahead of the event. Senior officers of the police, Army, Central Armed Police Forces and civil administration have reviewed arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the Games.
Officials have inspected athlete accommodations, transportation facilities, medical support and emergency response systems. Authorities said all necessary measures have been put in place to provide a secure and professional environment for athletes and visitors.
The ice leg of KIWG 2026, held in Leh from January 20 to 26, concluded with Haryana topping the medal tally with four gold medals in figure skating and ice skating events. Ladakh, Maharashtra and Telangana followed in the standings.
The Khelo India Winter Games have played a significant role in promoting winter sports among youth and identifying grassroots talent across the country. Gulmarg, known for its ski slopes and winter sports infrastructure, has hosted multiple editions of the Games.
Tourism stakeholders expect the event to provide a further boost to the local economy. Gulmarg has emerged as one of Kashmir’s most visited destinations in 2025, attracting tourists for skiing, snowboarding and winter festivals. Officials believe the national spotlight on the Games will further strengthen Kashmir’s position as a winter sports hub and increase tourist footfall during the ongoing season.
