Ludhiana: Khanna police have arrested a person who allegedly opened fire at Pahaljeet Singh, grandson of former MLA Harbans Singh Ghuman, in Gurdaspur. A police official said the accused was linked to a gang involved in extortion and drug supply, allegedly operating on the directions of handlers based abroad. The official said that on March 13, ASI Devinder Singh of Samrala police station, along with his team, was checking suspicious persons and vehicles near Sua Puli in ITI area of Samrala.During checking, police stopped and questioned a youth, who identified himself as Gautam, a resident of Hario Kalan village in Samrala. The official said that during a search, police recovered 10 grams of heroin from his possession. Gautam was arrested and booked under the NDPS Act.As per SP Pawanjit, during interrogation, Gautam said he had procured the heroin from Gursahib Singh, a resident of Dostpur village in Gurdaspur district. He said Gursahib allegedly supplied drugs across various districts. Following this disclosure, police nominated Gursahib Singh in the case and arrested him.Further investigation revealed that Gursahib Singh, along with his associates, was involved in the firing incident targeting Pahaljeet Singh in Ghuman Kalan, in which Pahaljeet was injured. He added that the strike was carried out following an extortion call made from abroad.Police said accused was already absconding in several cases related to extortion and drug trafficking. Multiple cases under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act have also been registered against him. The official added further investigation is underway and crucial revelations are expected during questioning of the accused.
