Kanpur: Kanpur Electric Supply Company (Kesco is actively promoting the installation of smart prepaid meters across the City to improve transparency, efficiency and consumer convenience in electricity consumption.Smart prepaid meters are advanced with IS-certified devices equipped with built-in communication technology that ensures accurate and reliable electricity usage tracking. The meters enable consumers to monitor their daily electricity consumption in near real-time, helping them manage usage more efficiently.As per the CEA Regulations (Amendment), 2019, all new consumer meters were mandated to be smart meters with prepaid functionality. Existing conventional meters were also replaced in a phased manner within the stipulated time frame set by the Central Government.Kesco managing director Samuel Paul said, “A key feature of smart prepaid meters is prepaid functionality, allowing users to recharge electricity similar to mobile phones through digital payment platforms such as UPI, Paytm and Google Pay. Consumers can also access detailed usage data hourly, daily and monthly through the UPPCL Smart App.”Paul said the initiative brought multiple benefits to consumers, including real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, a 2% rebate on prepaid usage, accurate and transparent billing with no hidden charges, regular alerts via SMS and mobile app for low balance and transactions, automatic reconnection without the need to visit substations, and easy complaint registration through the app.Additionally, in cases where there are no outstanding dues, the previously deposited security amount is credited to the consumer’s prepaid balance.The Official said installation of smart meters is being carried out free of cost for existing consumers under the RDSS scheme, while new connections are provided as per UPERC-approved rates. Consumers are advised to verify installer credentials, check meter seals and ensure proper documentation during installation.Kesco has urged consumers to cooperate in the transition towards smart energy management to ensure greater control, transparency and convenience in electricity usage.
