Behrampore: Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir has accepted an Election Commission (EC) suggestion to name his newly formed outfit the Aam Janata Unnayan Party. Kabir had initially announced the name Janata Unnayan Party on Dec 22, 2025, but the EC informed him of a prior application for that name.“Ruhul Amin had applied for the JUP name earlier. The EC suggested Aam Janata Unnayan Party, which is appropriate as my goal is public development. After the mandatory newspaper advertisements, we will seek a party symbol,” Kabir said.
On Wednesday, a team of 12 CISF personnel reached Kabir’s residence at Manikyahar after the Union home ministry accorded the Bharatpur MLA Y-plus category security. The move follows a Calcutta High Court order allowing Kabir to seek central protection citing threat perceptions. Previously, the state govt provided him with four security personnel, but the arrangement collapsed after his PSO, Jumma Khan, filed a complaint alleging that Kabir’s son, Golam Nabi Azad, assaulted him over a leave dispute.TMC district core committee member Naru Gopal Mukherjee slammed the move, saying: “We always maintained Kabir acted on BJP instructions; this confirms it. Even senior BJP leaders have limited cover, yet he secured Y-plus. It is clear that Naushad (Siddiqui) and Kabir are following a BJP script.”Responding to the charges, Kabir stated: “Trinamool leaders attack me without grounds. I moved the HC for security due to specific threats I received from Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, and Kolkata.”
