MMU calls it a blatant act of aggression
Srinagar, Mar 1: Political leaders across Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday reacted with concern and grief after Iranian authorities confirmed the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US–Israeli strike, a development that has heightened tensions across West Asia and triggered reactions across the region.
Iranian state media reported that Khamenei was killed in the attack, which also claimed the lives of several others, including members of his family. The reports quickly reverberated across Jammu and Kashmir, where political leaders expressed sorrow, concern for regional stability, and appeals for calm.
National Conference
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah expressed what his party described as “profound anguish” over the killing of the Iranian leader.
In a statement issued by the party, Farooq termed the development “tragic and destabilising,” saying it could have serious implications for peace and stability in the already volatile West Asian region.
He said that incidents of such magnitude deepen uncertainty and grief among people across the world and called for wisdom and restraint from global powers. Abdullah emphasised that adherence to international law and diplomatic engagement remained essential to preventing further escalation.
He also appealed to people in Jammu and Kashmir to maintain calm and peace in the wake of the development. He urged the administration to ensure that those wishing to mourn are allowed to do so peacefully while maintaining public order.
Peoples Democratic Party
Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti strongly criticised the role of Israel and the United States in the killing of the Iranian leader.
In a post on social media platform X, Mehbooba described the day as a “deeply tragic and shameful point in history.” She accused Israel and the United States of openly celebrating Khamenei’s death and condemned what she termed their actions.
She also criticised several Muslim countries, alleging that many had chosen “convenience and expedience over conscience.” She said history would remember who stood for justice and who sided with oppression. She also offered prayers for the people of Iran during what she described as a moment of immense grief.
J&K Pradesh Congress Committee
The J&K Pradesh Congress Committee has postponed all political activities scheduled for March 01 in honour of the Iranian Supreme Leader.
The party has strongly condemned the air Strikes on Iranian Supreme Leader,terming it inhuman, barbaric and cowardly act on the part of US and Israil.
President J&K Pradesh Congress Committee Tariq Hameed Karra led the rank and file of the party to express profound grief and sorrow over this great loss.
The party in a statement expressed heartfelt condolences over the killing of the Supreme Leader and equally shared the grief and pain.
Peoples Conference
Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone described the situation as distressing and expressed sorrow over the killing.
Sajad said he prayed for peace in Iran and across the Gulf region, expressing concern for families in Jammu and Kashmir whose relatives are currently living or working in conflict-affected areas.
“These are disturbing times, with families worried about their loved ones stuck in countries overtaken by conflict,” he said, adding that he hoped for the safe return of those caught in volatile regions.
Apni Party
Meanwhile, Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari chaired a condolence meeting in Srinagar where party leaders gathered to mourn Khamenei’s death and offer prayers.
According to a party statement, leaders paid tribute to the late Iranian leader and expressed deep sorrow over the reported attack that led to his killing. The participants condemned what they described as aggression against Iran and prayed for peace.
In a message posted on X, Altaf said he mourned Khamenei’s death with a “broken heart and bowed spirit,” describing him as an extraordinarily brave and towering leader whose influence shaped his nation and inspired millions.
He said the void created by Khamenei’s death would not be easily filled and called for prayers for the Iranian people during this difficult time.
Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU)
Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU), the largest conglomerate of Islamic religious organisations in Jammu and Kashmir, has in a joint statement expressed profound grief and condemnation over the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei, describing it as a blatant act of aggression by the US and Israel that has shaken the conscience of the Muslim world. “In this hour of immense grief , the people of Jammu & Kashmir stand in heartfelt solidarity with the leadership and people of Iran.”
Members of MMU including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mufti Azam Nasir-ul-Islam, Maulana Muhammad Rahmatullah Qasmi, Aga Syed Hasan Al-Mousavi Al-Safvi, Dr. Adil Latif Al-Kandi, Aga Syed Muhammad Hadi, Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari, and others , said that the people of Jammu & Kashmir denounce this atrocity and the continuing aggression against Iran, as well as the massacre of innocent girl students in Minab. It termed these developments as deeply disturbing,warning that such reckless acts of aggression threaten to further destabilise the region and endanger global peace.
MMU said that in view of the outraged feelings of the people of jammu Kashmir against this brutal assassination and the ongoing aggression in the region, MMU appeals to people to observe a voluntary strike tomorrow to register their protest in a peaceful manner . It has also appealed to people , to register their protests in their own localities peacefully ensuring that peace and order is not disturbed.
J&K Grand Mufti
Jammu and Kashmir’s Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam described the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as an “irreparable loss” for the Muslim world and condemned the strike that led to his death.
In a video message, the Grand Mufti expressed what he called “strong condemnation in the strongest possible words” of the assassination.
He said Khamenei’s death was a “great and irreparable loss” for the Muslim Ummah.
Referring to the military action that resulted in Khamenei’s death, the Grand Mufti alleged that Israel and the United States had carried out bombings in Iran that targeted civilians, including children. He described the developments as “painful and distressing” for the Muslim world.
The Grand Mufti urged Muslim nations to remain united and “stand firmly for justice,” and called on the people of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain peace and calm.
Awami Itihaad Party
Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) also expressed deep sorrow over his killing.
An emergency executive council meeting of the Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) was convened in this regard and was presided over by Vice Chairman Adv. G. N. Shaheen. The meeting was attended by General Secretaries Prince Parveez and Nazir Ahmad Khan, State Secretary Sheikh Ashiq, Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, Spokesperson & PRO to MP Baramulla Firdouse Baba, and Secretary Finance Parveez Ahmad Bhat, where the situation was discussed in detail and a collective tribute was paid.
AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei has deeply saddened millions who regarded him as religious and political leader and resistance. He said such unfortunate situation leave lasting emotional scars and remind humanity of the heavy cost of conflict and confrontation.
Inam said AIP through its Executive Council meeting, conveyed heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the people of Iran during this difficult time and prayed for patience and strength for those mourning the loss. “May Allah grant the departed leader the highest place in Jannah and give courage to Muslim Ummah for facing grief and uncertainty,” he said.
The AIP spokesperson emphasized that moments of tragedy should inspire unity, compassion and reflection across the Muslim Ummah. He urged the international community to act with wisdom and restraint to prevent further loss of innocent lives and to prioritise peace and dialogue over escalation.
