PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry police booked a doctor at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), his driver and four others on charges of duping a woman of Rs 25 lakh after promising a job for her son in the front office at Jipmer. Police registered the case after a direction from a local court.Police said V Valarmathi, 49, residing at Jipmer quarters, was introduced to S Kanniappan, the driver of Dr Gowtham Roy, a doctor posted at Jipmer. Kanniappan claimed that Roy could arrange a job for her son at Jipmer and demanded Rs 25 lakh for the placement. Valarmathi gave Rs 15 lakh in two instalments to Kanniappan between 2020 and 2022.Later, the driver introduced her to the doctor. They demanded that she give the balance of Rs 10 lakh to ensure the job for her son. She gave Rs 10 lakh in 2023. But they did not keep the promise. When Valarmathi demanded that they either return the money or get placement for her son, they threatened her with dire consequences. She lodged a complaint with the D Nagar police on March 28, 2023. But police did not initiate any action forcing her to approach the court, which directed police to register a case and commence inquiries.
