Dumka: Jamtara police arrested five members of a cyber fraud gang in simultaneous raids across villages in the district, police said on Sunday. The operation was conducted by a special team of the Cyber Crime police station after receiving a tip-off.Jamtara SP Shambhu Kumar Singh said the team, led by cyber police station officer-in-charge Rajesh Mandal, carried out raids in Mattand village under the Karmatanr police station area and Lokania village under Narayanpur police station limits.Those arrested were identified as Vishnu Mandal, Sachin Mandal, Sagar Nayak, Kishore Das and Biswajit Das. Police said the accused were involved in cyber fraud activities for a long time and were running an organised network to cheat people online.During the raids, police seized 15 mobile phones, 14 SIM cards, four ATM cards, two laptops and around Rs 50,000 in cash from their possession.“Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused posed as bank officials and called victims, claiming their debit or credit cards would be blocked. They obtained confidential banking details from victims and carried out fraudulent transactions through online payment platforms such as PhonePe and Google Pay,” the SP said.He added that the accused also impersonated electricity department officials and duped people in the name of electricity bill payments.Cases were registered at the Cyber Crime police station under case numbers 29/26 and 30/26. Police said seized devices are being examined to trace other suspects and the scale of the fraud.
