Kanpur: A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun who underwent sterilisation at a govt hospital in 2023 and later gave birth to a child has approached officials seeking govt assistance for the child’s upbringing. On Friday, the 27-year-old woman submitted a demand letter to the district magistrate, who asked the chief medical offocer (CMO) to investigate the issue.A mother of two, the woman gave birth to another boy 18 months after the tubectomy. She has argued that the birth occurred due to the health department’s negligence and that the govt must take responsibility for raising the boy, who’s now 1.5 years old. Her husband, 35, said she underwent sterilisation after they had two children. He said the health department told them the procedure was completely successful, and the couple was satisfied.A mason by profession, the man said their financial condition was far from sound and with mouths to feed in the joint family, there was no way they could afford to bring up a third child. He said that he complained to the health authorities many times since April 2024, but “no one ever bothered to hear us”. Jalaun CMO Dr Virendra Singh said the matter related to the Dakor area and a complaint has been received. He said the case file was being retrieved, and an investigation was being conducted. “Only after the investigation report comes in, will it be possible to clearly say at what level negligence occurred or not.” He also said a decision on compensation would be taken on the basis of the investigation as per govt rules.
