Kolkata: A resident of Chowbaga fell victim to a cybercrime and was allegedly duped of nearly Rs 23 lakh in an investment scam orchestrated through a social media messaging platform. The victim, a trader, filed a complaint, at Anandapur Police Station.The incident reportedly began on Feb 23, when the victim was added to a WhatsApp group titled “U-3 India Wealth Strategy Discussion Group.” Investigators believe the group admins, operating from multiple mobile numbers, including international prefixes, lured the complainant with promises of high-yield returns on investments.The victim reportedly transferred Rs 22,98,000 to various accounts through IMPS, RTGS, UPI and NEFT between March 3 and March 25. The fraud came to light when the complainant attempted to withdraw a portion of his purported earnings. Upon realising he was unable to access the funds or the promised profits, he approached the cops. According to cops, the case was initiated on April 3 under Sections 316(2), 318(4) and 61(2) of the BNS.
