After being put into bat under testing conditions, India’s KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal batted with supreme grit to see off the entire morning session, unseparated with the partnership score of 78. Then came England’s counter-punching act, as they reduced the visitors from 94/0 to 140/3, breaking through that top order. They could have had another, but Jamie Smith put down a fairly simple chance of Sai Sudharsan on 20, with the team score at that stage being 139/2. In the final session, India managed to get their noses back in front, through the 72-run stand between Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant, before a freak injury saw the latter walking off retired hurt. Stokes eventually managed to dismiss Sudharsan for 61 but not before the damage had been done. Jadeja 19*(37) and Shardul 19*(36) remain unbeaten.
