NAGPUR: The Indian Institute of Management-Nagpur (IIM-Nagpur) is planning to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a swift assessment of students’ answer sheets and project work, the institute’s director Bhimaraya Metri told TOI on Saturday.
“Though the idea is to reduce time lag, it would not replace teachers on the job. AI would also be used for setting question papers, and the difficulty level would be set through prompts. Manual assessment, which takes around two weeks, would be done in a day or two through AI tools,” he said.
AI cannot replace humans, but it certainly cannot be ignored and IIM is looking forward to optimally use technology while nurturing innovative thinking, which business leaders should possess, Metri told TOI.
He said the idea was to use AI at multiple levels and the institute is holding meetings to explore methods, including obtaining licences for the use of certain AI tools. A decision is expected soon, he added.
Currently, students manually write answers. To enable AI assessment, it will be made online. The AI tool, in turn, will search for certain key lines in the answer code to make an assessment.
“However, this would not end there. There’s a likelihood that answers may be much better than AI’s own assessment or the answer code. This is where human intervention would come into play. After AI, the papers would go through an examiner’s eye to rule out any gaps. However, an initial assessment by AI would certainly make the whole process much faster,” Metri told TOI.
. “However, it should not be a copy-paste exercise. The faculty will also be armed with advanced AI to explore counter measures. This is expected to keep creativity alive in students,” said Metri.
The students would also be evaluated on their ability to use AI. It ultimately depends on the right question to get the right answer. The ability to use AI properly may also become one of the criteria for students’ assessment, said the IIM director.
