Sambalpur: Friendships between humans and animals are common, but bonding with insects is almost unheard of. In a rare instance in Sambalpur district, a swarm of honeybees has developed an unusual yet peaceful relationship with a roadside eatery owner, drawing curious visitors every day.At Kadaligad village under Rairakhol sub-division, Satyanarayan Meher (35), a young entrepreneur, runs a small eatery along the busy Ranchi-Vijayawada NH-153B. Nearly three months ago, thousands of honeybees suddenly settled in a corner of his shop and built a large hive. What has surprised locals and travellers alike is the bees’ calm behaviour. Despite the hive being barely a few steps from the kitchen and customers, not a single person has been harmed. The eatery now doubles as a local attraction, with travellers stopping for both snacks and a glimpse of the unusual coexistence.Even with smoke from cooking, constant footfall, and noise from the highway, the bees remain undisturbed. Customers can walk close to the hive without fear, and workers even sleep inside the shop at night without any inconvenience.“We were scared initially when the bees appeared in such large numbers,” said Satyanarayan. “But when they didn’t harm anyone, we let them stay. Now it feels like they are part of our daily life.”Locals are amazed too. Swapnesh Naik said newcomers often panic at first but soon realise the bees are harmless. Another villager, Bijay Pradhan, called the sight “surprising and fascinating.” In a world often plagued by tension, this quiet example of harmony between humans and honeybees offers a refreshing message of peaceful coexistence.
