Ludhiana: A newly married woman sustained critical burn injuries after she was allegedly set on fire by her husband and in-laws in the Meharban area of the city. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the woman’s husband and her mother-in-law. Local sources stated that the victim, identified as Kanta Kaur, suffered nearly 90% burns and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Investigating officer ASI Paramjit Singh of the Meharban police station noted that officials received information regarding a woman with severe burn injuries from CMC Ludhiana on March 25.The victim’s statement was eventually recorded on March 31 in the presence of a judicial magistrate after her condition showed slight improvement. In her statement, Kanta Kaur alleged that she had married Gurpreet Singh approximately four months ago and had faced consistent mental and physical harassment from her in-laws since the wedding. She informed the police that disputes frequently arose because she expressed a desire to live separately from the extended family. The complainant told officers that on the day of the incident, an argument escalated, following which her husband, along with his parents, allegedly poured petrol on her and set her ablaze with the intent to kill her. Police sources confirmed that after registering a formal case into the matter, they are currently probing the circumstances.
