Guwahati: City markets have come alive with vibrant colours and festive energy as vendors rolled out a wide range of products ahead of holi. Stalls are selling gulals, water guns, masks, balloons and shirts, catering to children, youth and families preparing for the festival.Despite the vibrant displays, sellers say business has been slower than expected so far. Many shopkeepers said footfall in markets has been moderate till now, with customers simply looking but not making any purchases. “I have just sold items worth Rs 5000 till now, but I have items worth Rs 80,000. People usually come in during the final hours ahead of the festival. Good sales can still be expected,” Pinak Das, a shopkeeper in the Fancy Bazar area, said.Dabloo Sarkar, a shopkeeper in Paltan Bazar, said, “Customers have changed their buying patterns, as they are more interested in buying herbal colours, with some asking for skin-safe and chemical-free products. Other than that, no other products have been sold yet.”Meanwhile in sweet shops, sale of traditional sweets and snacks have started, although bulk purchases remain limited.Residents said this year’s celebration are likely to be low-key. Rabindra Nandi, a resident of Lalganesh, said, “Ongoing construction work across several areas has disrupted daily movement and reduced open spaces. Dust, traffic diversions and blocked lanes have made it inconvenient to plan large gatherings or celebrations on the street.”Parents said they prefer small, controlled celebrations within housing societies or homes. Some residents also cited safety concerns as reasons for keeping celebrations simple.Youngsters said Holi celebrations are much more than just grand arrangements. “We prefer minimal arrangements because it’s more about enjoying together than spending excessively,” said Rudipta Nath, a university student.
