The construction boom in the hotel sector is set to expand even further.
For the first time in the island’s history, nine hotels will be under construction at the same time.
Senior Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Dr William Duguid announced tonight at a celebratory Barbados Labour Party (BLP) rally that in addition to the six hotels that were mentioned in the Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals, a further three were in the pipeline.
Speaking at rally in St Albans, St James to mark the party’s seventh anniversary in office and to celebrate Chad Blackman’s by-election victory in St James North on Wednesday, Duguid outlined the scale of the upcoming hotel developments.
Construction has already started on the site of the old Heywoods Hotel in St Peter on a Beaches Hotel under the Sandals brand.
Another hotel earmarked for construction is Odyssey Hotel, which will house 180 rooms on Maxwell Coast Road Christ Church.
The third new project is the transformation of the former Paradise Hotel into Montage Hotel.
“In addition to six hotels . . . . for the first time in the history of this country, we will be in a position to have nine hotels built simultaneously,” Duguid said.
“That is the work of the Barbados Labour Party. That is the work of seven years of putting things together. And now we are seeing the fruits of our labour for the next seven and beyond.” (HG)
