Chikkamagaluru: Hirekolale Lake, which supplies water to the city, filled up, and MLA H D Thammaiah offered bagina to the water body on Tuesday. For the first time, the lake, also a tourist attraction, filled in June. The MLA stated that the city received drinking water through gravitational flow for approximately 40 years. The MLA highlighted that Hirekolale Lake is among the few lakes in the state that supply drinking water to urban areas through gravity. Here the water flows naturally to the jackwell and does not need pumping using motors. Originally designed to serve a population of 40,000, the lake has consistently provided potable water even though the Malnad town expanded its limits.Under the Amrut scheme, there was a proposal for a 24/7 water supply. However, due to technical issues, water is currently being supplied every two days, Thammaiah said. He assured that with both the Yagachi Dam and Hirekolale Lake, there will be no drinking water shortages for city residents for the next two years.District commissioner CN Meena Nagaraj, tahsildar Reshma Shetty, Hirekolale gram panchayat president Kavita, vice-presidents, members, and local villagers were present.
