As United States and Israeli strikes on Iran under Operation Epic-Fury killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, recorded massive business activity.
Posting on X, Musk wrote, “Highest usage of ???? ever.” He was responding to a post by X Head of Product Nikita Bier, who said, “Today was the biggest day on ???? in history.”
Record-breaking global usage
Usage of the platform surged sharply as geopolitical developments intensified over the past 48 hours. X set a new all-time record for activity in the previous 24 hours, as of around midday IST on 1 March 2026.
Elon Musk confirmed the record directly while replying to Bier’s post, again stating, “Highest usage of ???? ever,” and later adding, “For now,” suggesting the figure could soon be exceeded.
Breaking news drives engagement
The spike was driven by global interest in breaking developments, including reports of US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran, the reported death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Reports said users turned to X for real-time updates, reactions, memes and discussions, with the platform serving as a major source of instant and unfiltered information during the fast-moving crisis.
