Ahmedabad: The city’s eastern areas were severely affected by heavy rain on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging and crippling traffic congestion. Many commuters were stuck in traffic jams for nearly three hours between 6 pm and 11.45 pm.The downpour prompted authorities to close multiple underpasses and launch a search operation for a missing person. The man went missing near Mogal Mata Temple in Ambikanagar, Odhav, reportedly near a waterlogged pit. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) sources said that rescue teams have been deployed to search for the individual.The worst-hit areas included Raipur, Rakhial, Hatkeshwar, Maninagar, Khokhra, Gomtipur, Uttamnagar and Kubernagar among others. Waterlogging was reported at several major crossroads, underpasses and roads, including the Saijpur underpass, Kubernagar bazaar and Bharghav Road near Sardarnagar.Maninagar recorded 118.5mm of rain between 6pm and 9.45pm, the highest, while Vatva received 56mm. Odhav received 111.5mm, Viratnagar 76.5mm, Ramol 57.5mm and Nikol 69mm of rain. Other areas such as Paldi received 36mm of rain, Vasna 27mm and Sarkhej 15.5mm. The stretch connecting Raipur to Rakhial was particularly affected, with commuters reporting a gruelling three-hour journey due to severe waterlogging. The situation was further exacerbated by stormwater accumulation on the roads, causing traffic to come to a near standstill.Between 6pm and 9.45pm, the city recorded an average of 48.22mm of rainfall, with some places in the eastern part of the city, like Odhav and Chakudiya receiving between 114.5mm and 100mm respectively. Civic body sources said that underpasses at Daxini, Mithakhali and Kubernagar were closed for traffic. Light rain was reported in many areas of western Ahmedabad.
