Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said while harmony among diverse communities in the state was possible only because of the BJP govt, Congress has been working exclusively for Bangladeshi ‘miyas’ and neglecting indigenous people.Addressing back-to-back rallies at Dhemaji, Majuli and Sadiya, Sarma said, “You can see for yourself now that after BJP formed govt in state, the Bangladeshi miyas have been cut to size. During this term, we broke their hands and legs politically. Next time, we will break their backbone so they cannot live peacefully in Assam,” he said.‘Miya’ is a term historically used pejoratively for Bangaldesh-origin immigrant Muslims in AssamSarma said BJP was working for all communities — Assamese, Bengali, Hindi-speaking people, Gorkhas and tribals.Taking aim at Congress’s slogan of ‘Natun Bor Asom’ (new greater Assam), Sarma said, “We want our ‘Bor Asom’ on the ideals of Sankardev and Sukapha, not a ‘Natun Bor Asom’ of Bangladeshi Miyas.”The CM also highlighted BJP’s push for indigenous rights, land security and infrastructure development, asserting that the NDA would return to power with a strong mandate.
