Hisar: A man accused of demanding Rs 50 lakh in extortion was injured in a police encounter in Hansi after he allegedly snatched a weapon from a constable and opened fire on a police team, officials said. The accused, identified as Anurag, was apprehended by a Special Task Force (STF) team late on Friday night. According to police, he was being taken to a location near Sundar Canal bridge for the recovery of weapons when the incident occurred. Police officials said that around 11 pm, as Anurag stepped out of the vehicle, he allegedly overpowered a constable, snatched his firearm, and began firing at the team. The police retaliated, and during the crossfire, Anurag sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was initially admitted to the Civil Hospital in Hansi and later referred to the Civil Hospital in Hisar for further treatment.
Police said Anurag and an accomplice were arrested within 2 hours of the extortion attempt earlier on Friday. CCTV footage reportedly captured the 2 arriving on a motorcycle, throwing an extortion note inside the shop, and fleeing the scene. The accused is a resident of Vikas Nagar in Hansi and reportedly worked at a local eatery.

The incident took place at Chotu Misthan Bhandar, a nearly 40-year-old sweet shop located opposite the vegetable market in Hansi. According to shop owner Hanni, 2 motorcycle-borne youths had arrived at around 3:30 pm. One of them entered the shop and handed over a slip to an employee. The note, addressed to “Lala”, demanded Rs 50 lakh and warned that the amount must be paid within 1 day, threatening consequences otherwise.The shop owner immediately alerted the police. DSP Vinod Shankar and City SHO Sukhjeet Singh reached the spot with a team and launched a search operation. DSP Shankar said the names “Basu alias Anurag” and “Himanshu” were mentioned in the note. Both suspects were traced and arrested shortly afterwards. A video of the suspects arriving on a motorcycle and fleeing after throwing the note also surfaced, the police said.MSID:: 128885717 413 |
