GURGAON: Residents of Sector 23A have flagged MCG’s inaction towards desilting and repair of the stormwater drainage network in the area. The sector has around 6km of stormwater drainage network on 18-metre, 15-metre and 10-metre internal roads. These include two types of drains, underground pipe drains along the 18m and 15m roads, and box-type drains along the 10m roads.A detailed estimate for desilting and repair of all stormwater drains in the sector was first prepared in Jan last year and revised in March 2025 after a review by an MCG team. However, residents said the proposal was later set aside.Instead, in June, a separate emergency estimate of around Rs 10 lakh was prepared as a temporary monsoon-preparedness measure for the entire sector. Even that exercise remained incomplete.“The contractor carried out barely 20-25% of the work before discontinuing it. Only partial desilting was done, and the most critical stretches were left untouched. As a result, the sector again suffered severe waterlogging during the monsoon,” said Bhawani Shankar Tripathy, general secretary of Sector 23A RWA.– Sector 23A condition, My Neighborhood Matters.A major concern, they said, is the underground pipe drainage system on wider roads, which has not been cleaned properly for years. “The pipe drains were never desilted. This is why the 18m roads continue to get waterlogged year after year, every monsoon. We have been informing the MCG for at least the last three years, but no concrete action has followed,” Tripathy added. While some desilting was attempted in the box drains, residents said even that remained inadequate because of encroachments, silt accumulation and damaged slabs. In several stretches, the drain covers have sunk below road level, leading to repeated damage as vehicles are parked on top of them.“Many slabs have been broken because they were never repaired. Despite repeated follow-ups, no action has been taken so far. With the monsoon approaching, we fear that the sector may once again face flooded roads and choked drains unless the work begins immediately,” said Rohit Yadav, RWA president.Meanwhile, MCG officials said the matter will be looked into. “Necessary action will be taken accordingly,” an official said.
